Benefits Of Concrete Lifting Via Polyurethane Foam Injection
The benefits of concrete lifting – also known as slabjacking or polyurethane foam injection – are many, including:
- You only need to do it once. Another method of lifting concrete called “mudjacking” uses a heavy cement
- It won’t break the bank. Polyurethane foam injection is less expensive that replacing the slab.
- Most repairs take only a few hours. Polyurethane foam injection is a fast procedure and once it’s complete, you can immediately start using the slab again.
- It doesn’t harm the environment. Polyurethane foam is a green solution that won’t release harmful chemicals into the soil.
- Even concrete just looks good! Sunken, uneven concrete is an eyesore.
What Causes Concrete Slabs to Sink or Become Uneven?
Concrete slabs sink and become uneven for a variety of reasons including…
Too much water under the slab. Water can wash away the soil creating voids that the slab will then sink into.
Weak soil. Not all soils can support the weight of a heavy concrete slab.
Expansive soil. Expansive soil expands as it absorbs water and then shrinks by that same amount when it dries out. Over time this swelling-shrinking cycle can cause slabs to become uneven.
Invasive tree roots. The tree’s roots push against the slab and eventually cause sections of it to become uneven.
What are the Different Ways to Lift a Concrete Slab?
Traditionally, uneven slabs were repaired either via “mudjacking”, or by digging up the sunken slab and pouring new concrete. Neither one of these methods was the best solution though and that’s why almost all concrete slabs are now lifted using polyurethane foam injection.
Mudjacking
Mudjacking uses a heavy cement slurry to raise the slab and this is a problem because the slurry isn’t exactly lightweight. If the soil was already failing to support the slab, adding more weight isn’t going to help.
Concrete Replacement
Replacing a slab means digging up the old one and then pouring new concrete. This is an expensive and time-consuming repair though. Freshly poured concrete takes time to dry and harden (i.e., cure). So, you won’t be able to use the new slab right away. Also, if the slab became uneven because the soil was weak, the new slab will eventually sink as well.
Of course, you should never add new concrete on top of a slab in order to even it out. This will only add more weight to an already sinking slab.
Polyurethane Foam Injection
Polyurethane foam injection (also known as ‘’slabjacking’’) is an inexpensive, minimally-invasive procedure that injects a lightweight foam under the sunken slab in order to lift it. It’s a quick repair, and when it’s done you can start using the slab again right away.

1. Call Center ***** – they took the call after 6:00 PM and were extremely professional. Guy on the phone (sorry I didn't write is name down), was so kind and emailed confirmation immediately. 2. Pre-Visit Confirmation ***** – Email, text and phone calls to confirm the time and prep me for the visit. Incredible. Nobody is doing this right these days and BAU absolutely has it nailed down. 3. Estimator ***** – I wish I could offer more than 5 stars. Joe Le Bel is the most professional tradesman I've met in a long time. Others are good too, but Joe is the gold standard. He sat with me to ask what I was concerned about and what was important to my family. Who does that???? Oh yeah, Joe did. So comforting. Joe was professional and respectful of our space. Was careful to be conscientious about where he placed his gear, tools and instruments. Super clean going under the house without tracking dirt and debris back into the house. (The inspectors from HomeGuard could definitely take notes on this!) Then, once Joe finished, he sat down with us and talked us through all the different aspects off his inspection. Foreman Andrew is incredible and a leader. We hired BAU to perform a whole house underpinning job from December 2022-March 2023. Our recently purchased 1950's home sat on expansive clay soil and had been settling for decades. The project was a big job and complicated by the winter rains that occurred throughout many days of the project. Andrew was extremely professional, knowledgeable about every aspect of the job and managed the entire project class and skill.He communicates very effectively and is transparent to assuage any concerns that we had on the project. He also shows up earlier than anyone, and works the entire day, rain or shine, in the mud and trenches with his team. This leadership was impressive. Since the completion of our project, he has remained available and came out to make some minor adjustments promptly and free of charge. Without any hesitation, I would entrust BAU to do my foundation work with the demand that Andrew lead the project. Thank you Andrew and your crew for a job well done.

We had Daniel come out to take a look at our foundation to see if there were any issues that needed to be fixed under our home (a second opinion). After our first inspection we were told there were numerous issues that needed to be fixed that surely would have cost us thousands. We were considering the Earthquake Brace and Bolt program so the first inspection was a recommended foundation company through the EBB program. Daniel came out and took his time measuring the house on the exterior and interior. He was super meticulous and took settling measurements and also went under our home and took photos of the foundation. He sat with us after and explained everything to us. Turns out our foundation is stable and not needing any work. Daniel was super professional and knows his trade very very well. He was very honest. I now have a company I would call back in a heart beat if I needed to have any foundational work done. I will also recommend them to any neighbors that need this kind of company. The estimate was free as well and Daniel also had no hesitation crawling under the house on a 101 degree day to check things out. 5 star company here. Do not hesitate and call them! -Nicole San Ramon

From my initial consultation with Rick DeSoto to the work performed by foreman Raul, and his team Jonathan and Demareon, this was the best possible experience in working Bay Area Underpinning for the first time. The crew was professional and adjusted the leveling jacks (and even added a couple as was needed) with care and great attention. Pricing was very reasonable too. I will sleep much better tonight. I noticed a crack in my foundation and called Bay Area Underpinning. Hunter came out and walked the entire property and went underneath. He identified one other issue that I knew about besides the crack and told me they could fix that too. I had no idea you call structural engineers for chimneys. His quote was fair to me and you can't beat the warranty. Today Jesus Villagomes and Erick Baez came out and fixed the crack, they also looked around underneath and reassured me AGAIN that my house was in good shape. Because I caught it early they were able to fill the crack and then add a carbon fiber exposy seal. They also sealed the crack from the outside, even though they had already filled it in under the house. They were professional, answered all my questions, no matter how many and honestly were just pleasant to work with. They also explained my maintenance plan so I knew what to expect. I would absolutely recommend this entire team, to stay professionally kind in high heat is amazing.

I had a great experience with Bay Area Underpinning. They fixed my foundation, which was a substantial job, in a matter days, and did all of the engineering and permitting at a very fair price. I cannot say enough good things about Tyler, Angelo, and Louise, who did all the hard work. They were on time each day, very diligent, and patiently answered all of my questions. Then, when the job was finished, they cleaned the work area and left it in a better condition than they found it. We just bought a house and literally every single metal pier in the crawlspace was rusted out. Bay Are Underpinning came in and did an awesome job. Their inspector Aaron was super thorough in assessing the damage and explained everything in detail. Then, the repair crew of Eric, Jesus, and Andrew came in and knocked out the entire job in a day — a huge relief considering we had a ton of other work we need to get done before moving in. The work is not cheap, but they offer financing options and stand by their work, so I feel very good about the entire job.

My friend recommended this company and their tech Jason Dye to me, so I requested a foundation inspection/estimate. Jason is very responsive. He would text me and let me know the ETA when he was on the way. After he arrived, he checked everything very carefully. He gave me some good suggestions to help maintain foundation in a good shape, and even helped me set up the extension pipes from gutter downspouts. We used BAU to install piers and screw jacks to level our home. Really pleased with the entire process. The communication was stellar and the foreman made sure we understood each step as it was happening. The whole crew was professional, polite, punctual, and very neat. Each day they left the job site nice and tidy. The overall result is amazing. Our floors are level and the house looks great. Would highly recommend for any foundation/leveling needs.
