The benefits of concrete lifting – also known as slabjacking or polyurethane foam injection – are many, including:
- Polyurethane foam injection is less expensive than digging up and replacing the slab. It also doesn’t take as long. Digging up and replacing a slab is a time-consuming fix.
- Most jobs take no more than a few hours. After the repair is complete, you can immediately begin using the slab again.
- Polyurethane foam is super lightweight. It’s able to lift a sunken concrete slab without burdening the soil with extra weight. This is important because most slabs sink because the soil isn’t able to support them. Therefore, the last thing you want to do is use a lifting method that adds more weight to the soil.
- Polyurethane foam won’t leach harmful chemicals into the soil. This makes it an environmentally-friendly, green solution.

What Causes Concrete Slabs To Sink Or Become Uneven?
Concrete slabs sink for a variety of reasons including…
Drainage problems. Too much water in the soil under the slab can lead to erosion, voids, and eventually, a sunken slab.
Weak soil. Certain types of soil are simply unable to hold up a heavy concrete slab.
Expansive soil. Expansive soils are those that expand as they soak up water, and shrink as they release it and dry out. This swelling/shrinking cycle can eventually lead to an uneven slab.
Invasive tree roots. You can probably guess how this happens. The roots push against the slab and cause sections of it to become uneven.
What are the Different Ways to Lift a Concrete Slab?
Prior to polyurethane foam injection, uneven slabs were lifted either by digging up and replacing the slab, or via a repair method called “mudjacking”. However, both solutions have their drawbacks, and that’s why, today, almost all sunken slabs are lifted using polyurethane foam injection.
Mudjacking
Mudjacking involves drilling holes in the concrete, and then injecting a cement slurry under the slab in order to lift it back up. The main drawback of mudjacking is the weight of the slurry. It’s heavy because it contains cement. If the soil under the slab was already struggling to support the weight of the concrete, adding even more weight via mudjacking isn’t going to help. It could even cause the slab to sink further into the soil, and then you’d be looking at another repair.
Concrete Replacement
Another method used prior to polyurethane foam injection involved simply digging up the sunken slab and pouring a new one. However, this is both an expensive and time-consuming solution. Newly poured concrete needs time to dry and harden, and that means it can’t be used right away. Also, if the slab became uneven because the soil wasn’t able to support it, the same thing will happen with the new slab.
Never attempt to add fresh concrete to an uneven slab in order to even it out. All you’ll be doing is adding more weight to soil that’s already having trouble holding up a slab.
Polyurethane Foam Injection
Polyurethane foam injection (also known as ‘’slabjacking’’) is a minimally-invasive solution for lifting and leveling concrete that involves drilling small holes in the concrete (they’ll be covered later), and then injecting the rapidly-expanding foam. The foam then lifts the slab back into position. It’s a fast repair – most jobs usually take no more than a few hours – and when it’s done you can immediately start using the slab again.

We recently had foundation work completed. The crew was on time every day and worked hard to keep a very dirty job and their traffic through the house to a minimum. The crew chief, Robert Busch, was amazing. Telling us what was planned for the day, any unforeseen problems, and giving us a recap of what was completed daily. We could not have had a better experience with his communication and hard work. Everyone was respectful and friendly. I also thought that the evaluation and estimate experience was positive. Jim communicated clearly and we never felt that work being suggested was unnecessary. Foreman Andrew is incredible and a leader. We hired BAU to perform a whole house underpinning job from December 2022-March 2023. Our recently purchased 1950's home sat on expansive clay soil and had been settling for decades. The project was a big job and complicated by the winter rains that occurred throughout many days of the project. Andrew was extremely professional, knowledgeable about every aspect of the job and managed the entire project class and skill.He communicates very effectively and is transparent to assuage any concerns that we had on the project. He also shows up earlier than anyone, and works the entire day, rain or shine, in the mud and trenches with his team. This leadership was impressive. I called in Bay Area Underpinning for foundation work. They were wonderful answering my many concerns, I received prompt return calls, the work was completed within an appropriate time frame, and the best thing he stayed with the estimate to the dollar. I loved the engineer, time frame, and minimal damage repair. I didn't know how my house was going to respond and even the marble and windows handled well. Unfortunately I didn't get the exact lift I wanted in the office even though they tried their hardest. My advice — call them when the problem first arises and the outcome and the house will lift with ease. I definitely recommend BAU. Because I live on a hill one pillar had to be covered – done. I also had a French drain installed to divert the water which was recommended. Thank you
