Benefits Of Concrete Lifting Via Polyurethane Foam Injection
The benefits of concrete lifting – also known as slabjacking or polyurethane foam injection – are numerous:
- It’s a permanent solution. Polyurethane foam is ultra lightweight and won’t burden the soil with additional weight. While mudjacking might lift the concrete temporarily, the heavy cement slurry adds weight to the soil. If the soil was having trouble supporting the sunken slab, adding more weight to it isn’t going to help. In fact, the slab could sink even more, and then you’ll be looking at another repair.
- It’s a cost-effective solution. The polyurethane foam injection repair method is less expensive that digging up the old slab and pouring a new one.
- Most jobs take only a few hours. Polyurethane foam injection usually doesn’t take more than a few hours, and after the repair is done, you can immediately start using the slab again.
- It weighs next to nothing. Polyurethane foam is able to lift concrete without adding extra weight to the soil.
- It doesn’t harm the environment. Don’t worry. Polyurethane foam is a green solution that won’t release harmful chemicals into the soil.
- Even concrete just looks good! Sunken, uneven concrete is an eyesore.
What Causes Concrete Slabs To Sink Or Become Uneven?
Concrete slabs sink and become uneven for a variety of reasons including…
- Drainage problems. If there’s an excess amount of water under the slab this can lead to erosion, and voids which the slab will then sink into.
- Weak soil. All soils are not alike. Some do not have the capacity to hold up a heavy concrete slab.
- Expansive soil. Expansive soils expands as they soak up moisture and shrink when they dry out. Over time, this swelling-shrinking cycle – which is usually seasonal – can cause uneven slabs.
- Invasive tree roots. You can probably visualize this problem because you’ve seen it so many times. Tree roots push against a slab and cause sections of it to become uneven.
What are the Different Ways to Lift a Concrete Slab?
The two ”old school” techniques for lifting and leveling sunken concrete slabs were digging up and replacing the old slab with a new one, or via a procedure called ”mudjacking”. Neither one was a particularly good solution though, as you shall see. Today, the vast majority of sunken concrete slabs are lifted and leveled via polyurethane foam injection.
Mudjacking
The mudjacking repair method involves using a slurry made up of soil, water, and cement to lift the slab. However, the slurry weighs a lot because there’s cement in it. If the slab became uneven because the soil under it wasn’t able to support it, adding even more weight to it is not a solution.
Concrete Repair
Uneven concrete slabs can also be repaired via digging up the sunken slab and replacing it with a new one. However, this is time-consuming because freshly poured slabs can’t be used right away. They need time to dry and harden. Also, if the soil wasn’t able to support the old slab, it won’t do any better with the new one.
One thing you should never do is add fresh concrete to a sunken slab in order to level it out. This just adds more weight to the slab, which is not what you want to do.
Polyurethane Foam Injection
Polyurethane foam injection – often referred to as ‘’slabjacking’’ – is a minimally-invasive repair technique that injects an ultra-lightweight foam under the slab in order to lift and level it. It’s a quick repair – usually no more than a few hours – and when it’s done you can immediately start using the slab again.
