In this article, we’ll answer the question “how often should a crawl space sump pump run?” There’s not an exact number of times a sump pump should run each day, the amount of time it runs depends on the amount of precipitation around your home. Let’s dig into more specifics.
How Often Should a Sump Pump Run?
How often your sump pump runs really depends on the weather and your home’s specific situation. If you live in an area where it rains a lot or where groundwater levels are often high, expect your sump pump to be quite active, sometimes running several times a day.
This is normal and a sign that your sump pump is working properly. As the sump pump collects water, a float switch activates, causing the sump pump to drain automatically. This keeps your crawl space dry and safe from flooding.
On the other hand, in drier regions or during stretches of calm weather, your sump pump will run much less. It will kick in only during the occasional heavy rain or when snow starts melting.
The age and condition of your sump pump also affect its frequency. An older or poorly maintained pump might run more often as it works harder to manage water levels. If your sump pump runs constantly for long stretches of time, it might be time to install an upgrade.
Regularly checking on your sump pump is a great habit to form. Simple steps like inspecting its operation, cleaning out the pit, and making sure the discharge lines are clear of debris keep the pump running efficiently and ensure your home is well-protected against water.
What Happens if a Crawl Space Sump Pump Isn’t Working?
Think about what happens if someone ignores a small leak in a boat—eventually, it can cause bigger issues. Your crawl space is much the same, and without a sump pump in good condition, water will cause a lot of damage.
Over time, water will collect below your home, especially during heavy rains or in areas with high groundwater levels. This standing water creates a humid environment, ideal for mold and mildew to thrive, which then lead to musty odors and potential health issues.
Crawl space moisture is also a serious problem for any wooden structures, including the supports that hold up your home. Over time, standing water can cause wood rot, weakening these supports. This compromises the structural integrity of your home, leading to issues like a sagging floor or drywall cracks.

When we had our 1960s home underpinned, the consultant arrived on time to give us a quote. He gave us different options for work to be done and had solutions to cutting cost on things that weren't absolutely necessary. The work was done within a week. All of the workers were professional. Something that stood out the most was the way the workers communicated with each other. They weren't your typical construction crew in this sense. They were very kind to each other and supportive of each other, even when they were in a difficult situation. This isn't common in construction. As for the cost, it was what we had expected and we don't have any complaints. Our house is level now and doesn't feel like we're drunk walking in areas that were previously sagging. There's a reason Bay Area Underpinning is #1 in the area. Would recommend, even if they aren't the cheapest- they get the job done right.

Bay Area Underpinning is OUTSTANDING!! Cody, Andrew, Francisco, David and their underpinning and concrete teams did exceptional work installing underpinnings to stabilize our house, then replacing the concrete patio that had to be removed to do the stabilization. Everyone on the teams were efficient, courteous, highly skilled, and thorough. I cannot recommend Bay Area Underpinning highly enough- through each step of the process, from the initial assessment and work quote, to the work and follow-up itself, the staff and crews of Bay Area Underpinning ensured that I was informed, reassured, and we’ll take care of. They were thoughtful about doing their work efficiently and cleaning up after the work was completed. I cannot recommend them highly enough!

Foreman Andrew is incredible and a leader. We hired BAU to perform a whole house underpinning job from December 2022-March 2023. Our recently purchased 1950's home sat on expansive clay soil and had been settling for decades. The project was a big job and complicated by the winter rains that occurred throughout many days of the project. Andrew was extremely professional, knowledgeable about every aspect of the job and managed the entire project class and skill. He communicates very effectively and is transparent to assuage any concerns that we had on the project. He also shows up earlier than anyone, and works the entire day, rain or shine, in the mud and trenches with his team. This leadership was impressive. Since the completion of our project, he has remained available and came out to make some minor adjustments promptly and free of charge. Without any hesitation, I would entrust BAU to do my foundation work with the demand that Andrew lead the project. Thank you Andrew and your crew for a job well done.

I called in Bay Area Underpinning for foundation work. They were wonderful answering my many concerns, I received prompt return calls, the work was completed within an appropriate time frame, and the best thing he stayed with the estimate to the dollar. I loved the engineer, time frame, and minimal damage repair. I didn't know how my house was going to respond and even the marble and windows handled well. Unfortunately I didn't get the exact lift I wanted in the office even though they tried their hardest. My advice — call them when the problem first arises and the outcome and the house will lift with ease. I definitely recommend BAU. Because I live on a hill one pillar had to be covered – done. I also had a French drain installed to divert the water which was recommended. Thank you

Everything looks good after the work was done. I can finally close my bathroom door. I appreciated the fact that the foreman Erick Baez, went over what was done as they were done. I also appreciated that the two installers Manny Erickson and Jesus Villagomez also communicated with me after they were done to reassure that they did a proper job installing the jacks. Very good to know how the process was going. Great job.

We recently purchased a home in San Jose. In the report it stated that our home was fine and no foundation issues were noted. Upon moving in my wife noticed some cracks started to appear on the walls around the house. We contacted Bay Area underpinning to have them come and inspect our house. A couple of days before our appointment, Jim Rivera gave us a call to confirm the day and time of the appointment. This was the first positive experience we had with Jim and BAU. On the day of the appointment Jim called to let us know that he was 30 minutes away and showed up right on time. Once he arrived he listened to the issues we were noticing and then he went to work. He brought in some hi-tek tools and explained to us what the readings meant. Jim was extremely thorough and personable. He clearly has a lot of knowledge and showed us a bunch of photos that he took while he was in our crawlspace as well as photos of some exterior things that he noticed. Overall he said our home was in great condition with only minimal issues that we should address. He was very patient in answering all of our questions and provided us with a quote when he was finished. We were pleasantly surprised that the cost was very reasonable and comes with a lifetime warranty. We will be giving our business to Jim and Bay Area Underpinning. As a new home owner we were terrified of what the cost could be to fix our home. Jim really helped us understand what was going on and we would suggest that anyone who is having similar foundation issues like ours, we highly recommend that you should call Jim Rivera and Bay Area Underpinning.
