Benefits Of Concrete Leveling And Concrete Lifting Via Polyurethane Foam Injection

The benefits of concrete leveling and concrete lifting – also known as slabjacking or polyurethane foam injection – are many, including:

  • Polyurethane foam won’t add more weight to the soil. Concrete slabs often sink because the soil they’re sitting on is unable to support them. Another common method of lifting and leveling concrete called “mudjacking” uses a cement slurry to lift the slab. Because cement is heavy this adds even more weight to the soil. If the soil was having trouble supporting the concrete before, adding more weight to it isn’t going to help. Polyurethane foam, on the other hand, is ultra lightweight and able to lift up the slab without adding additional weight to the soil.

  • It’s a cost-effective solution. Concrete leveling and lifting via polyurethane foam injection doesn’t cost as much as pouring a brand new slab.

  • It’s a fast repair. Polyurethane foam injection usually only takes a few hours to complete, tops. You can also use the slab immediately after the repair is complete.

  • It doesn’t harm the environment. Polyurethane foam is an environmentally-friendly solution that won’t leach harmful chemicals into the soil.

  • Level concrete just looks good! Sunken, uneven concrete is an eyesore.

What Causes Concrete Slabs To Sink Or Become Uneven?

Concrete slabs sink and become uneven for a variety of reasons including…

Drainage problems. If the soil under and around the slab contains an excess amount of water, if can wash away the soil and leave behind voids that the slab will then sink into.

Weak soil. Some soils aren’t able to support the weight of a heavy concrete slab.

Expansive soil. Expansive soils are those that swell as they soak up water and shrink when they dry out. Over time this swelling-shrinking cycle – that’s usually seasonal – can cause uneven slabs.

Invasive tree roots. You’ve probably seen this many times in your life. Tree roots push against a slab and cause sections of it to become uneven.

What Are The Different Ways To Lift And Level A Concrete Slab?

The two “old school” methods of lifting and leveling a concrete slab were mudjacking and digging up the old slab and pouring a new one. They weren’t the best solutions though, as you will see. Today, polyurethane foam injection is the method of choice for repairing a sunken slab.

Mudjacking

Mudjacking is a procedure where small holes are drilled into the slab, and then a slurry of soil, water, and cement is injected under the slab in order to lift it back up. The problem with mudjacking is the weight of the slurry. It’s heavy because it contains cement. If the soil was already struggling to support the slab, adding even more weight to it won’t help. It will only make things worse.

Concrete Replacement

Another traditional method for repairing a sunken slab is to simply dig it up and pour a new one. This is a time-consuming fix though. It takes time for newly poured cement to dry and cure (harden). This means there’s going to be
